World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide this week, on the 5th of June, to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

At BerryWorld, we are constantly looking at ways to minimise our impact on the planet and, today, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the work we have been doing with our partners at FareShare in the UK. Starting in July 2020, BerryWorld British growers and PrepWorld have contributed to provide the equivalent of 330k meals to people in need supported via FareShare nationwide network of 11,000 frontline charities.

“Partnering with FareShare has provided an outlet for delicious fruit which just didn't meet specifications on size or shape. It’s great to know that our surplus fruit has been effectively utilised to produce healthy meals for vulnerable families and individuals” explains Emma Henry, Senior Responsible Sourcing Manager at BerryWorld UK.

Re-purposing our surplus berries, BerryWorld and our growers are helping those in need whilst preventing fruit from going to waste, meaning reducing its environmental impact and adding an extra level of goodness to the soft fruit we supply.

Adele Fash, FareShare’s Commercial Manager, Produce says “We're very pleased to be working closely with BerryWorld and their suppliers. Not only are they working together to help us to provide their off spec fresh berries to thousands of people, but they are also helping to demonstrate publicly how they can help reduce their impact on the environment, by redistributing their good-to-eat surplus fruits to FareShare.
FareShare currently provides the equivalent of over 2 million meals per week via charities and community groups all over the UK. Thank you BerryWorld for supporting our work to tackle food waste and instead redistribute this surplus food to people”.
